Baptism, Christening and Thanksgiving

Baptism (also known as Christening) is a simple ceremony of washing in water, practised by Christians since the time of Jesus. It is a sign of turning to God, and of faith in Jesus Christ our Lord. At the same time, baptism symbolises Jesus' own death and resurrection.  Those who ask for baptism recognise that their standing with God depends on what Jesus did for them by His dying and rising again. All who are baptised are received into the family of the Christian Church.  Baptism represents what God does for us - He gives us new birth by His Holy Spirit.  This is what we pray for when we are baptised.  The one essential thing on the part of the person being baptised is sincere faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

In the case of a child, this response of faith must be made in the name of the child by sponsors (parents and godparents) until such time as the infant can make his or own response.  The church make a commitment to support the family in their journey of faith and the parents and godparents commit to helping the child grow in faith and become part of the church family.

If you would like to celebrate and give public thanks to God for the gift of your child alongside your family and friends, without the need to make a response of faith in the name of the child, then we also offer a Thanksgiving Service.

Usually your baptism happens at the church of the parish you live in but if you are outside of our parish then please do get in touch to discuss options.

We believe that married parents provide the foundation of public commitment which is consistent with the promises they make for their child at a baptism. However, we also recognise that life is not always as clear cut as we would like, and so we do not turn away anyone out of hand because of their personal circumstances and arrangements, but would want to explore possibilities in direct conversation so please contact our Childrens & Families Worker, Jo Birkby to discuss this further.

If you would like to arrange a Baptism or Thanksgiving, please complete our Baptism & Thanksgiving Application Form and return to Jo Birkby our Children & Families Worker via email or via the Church Office. Jo will then be in touch with you to arrange a visit from our Leadership Team.

If you haven't already been to our church, it would be great to welcome you to one of our morning services and for you to meet the church family. Please make yourselves known to one of the Welcomers who will point you in the direction of Jo Birkby, our Children & Families worker, or another member of the Baptism Team.

If you have any queries, please don't hesitate to contact us in the Church Office: 01483 473489 or email.
